Understanding Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers many healthcare services but not everything. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies help pay certain out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are used with Original Medicare, not in place of it.

In most states—including Indiana—Medigap benefits are standardized by plan letter.

For example, a Plan G from one company must provide the same core benefits as a Plan G from another. Prices and availability can vary by company and by state.

Who Can Apply?

You’re generally eligible to apply for a Medigap policy if you’re enrolled in both Parts A and B. The best time to buy is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the month your Part B coverage begins when you’re 65 or older.

After that window, applications may be subject to medical underwriting in many states.

If you first became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, Plans C and F aren’t available to you; other options remain.

Prescription Coverage:
Medicare Part D

Part D plans help pay for prescription drugs (generic and brand). These are offered by private insurers contracted with Medicare. If you have Original Medicare, you may enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan for prescription coverage.

Each Part D plan has its own formulary and pharmacy network, which may change annually.

It’s a good idea to review your medications and preferred pharmacies each year. If you go without creditable prescription drug coverage after you’re first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty if you join later. Enrollment is generally available during your Initial Enrollment Period, during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7), or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
