A Few Things You Must Know About Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap plans, are insurance policies sold by private companies to help cover the “gaps” in Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These gaps include out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Understanding Medigap is essential for anyone enrolled in Medicare who wants more predictable healthcare expenses. Bixler Insurance provides the same in Berne, IN, Bluffton, IN, Fort Wayne, IN, Portland, IN, Decatur, IN, Geneva, IN and surrounding areas.

  1. Not Part of Medicare Advantage

Medigap is different from Medicare Advantage (Part C). While Advantage plans replace Original Medicare, Medigap works with Original Medicare to help pay your share of costs. You cannot have both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time.

  1. Standardized Plans

Medigap plans are standardized in most states and labeled with letters (e.g., Plan G, Plan N). Each lettered plan offers the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. However, premiums can vary, so it’s wise to shop around.

  1. Enrollment Timing Matters

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the month you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurers must sell you a policy regardless of pre-existing conditions. After this window, acceptance may be subject to medical underwriting.

  1. Does Not Include Prescription Drug Coverage

Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you want drug coverage, you’ll need to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan.

  1. Monthly Premiums Vary

While Medigap can greatly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses, it comes with a monthly premium. Costs depend on the plan, your location, age, and the insurance company.

  1. Foreign Travel Coverage

Some Medigap plans (like Plan G or Plan F) offer limited emergency coverage when traveling outside the U.S., which Original Medicare generally does not provide.

  1. No Network Restrictions

Because Medigap works with Original Medicare, you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare nationwide—no networks or referrals required.
